For much of my life psychology and mental health to me was a mystery I wasn’t very interested in exploring. I thought I had everything handled. I was a commercial painter for good portion of my life while engaged and curious about about the nature of consciousness, and what it all means. I followed my bliss, as they say.

In 2004 I went back to school in Santa Cruz California to pursue an undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology with a minor in religious philosophy, but life has its way of showing up in unexpected ways, and I did not finish the degree until 2011.

Raising a family did not turn out the way one would expect either; life showed up in a big way, and it became very difficult to navigate. My daughter suffered from mental issues as did my wife, and I was not immune. These relationships and the healing of my family moved me into the field of mental health. I have had deep transformational experiences in how I view life, what it’s worth, and found ways for what I am do to with it all.

I have written books and papers about contemporary continental philosophy and more recently published papers concerning the discipline of counseling as an intentional practice. My current writing stems from my work, for its seems I never truly work, as the passion I hold for helping clients in individual and group therapy is, in a very significant respect, the meaning of my existence.

I help clients on the road to health and healing, to acceptance, and personal agency, in the office or online over telehealth.

My Goal

It might not seem like it right now, but the solution is within you. It is through our teamwork that I can help you to access and understand what is actually happening and the solution that works.

I will also help to you to learn skills to help you more effectively engage with others, your life, and move you toward what you want, to find agency, to find your Self.

My Approach

My approach to mental health is deeply rooted in philosophy and mindful experience. I believe that understanding oneself and the world around you is fundamental to achieving lasting well-being.

I understand feeling under the thumb of some outside force, and I understand feeling like it’s totally me, entirely my fault. Unable to understand ourselves or why we are the way we are, or being unable to enact the change we can see so clearly, therapy is about your process of health, of healing, of growing. I am with you empathically and meaningfully in your journey while bringing for your benefit the wealth of my experience and education, information that we sort out together for your circumstance. We engage to help you make sense of your experience. We feel, together. We work together to find trust, to help you through, to feel what you need to feel. To process what you need to process, to experience what you need to experience – this is mental health therapy.

I help you to learn to navigate the present more effectively, to sort your wants and needs, to process and come to terms with how you think and feel. By discovering what you might be needing from the past you can move toward who you want to be and what you value, for the future you want to have.

My Experience

I’ve been working in the mental health field for 6 years. As a milieu counselor for near four years on the floor of a psychiatric hospital, I assisted in helping clients through some of their lowest and challenging times in their lives. I learned a lot there; I’d say it was cutting my teeth, a jumping into the deep end while I was working on my master’s degree in counseling.

From full blown detachment from reality, methamphetamine psychosis, delusions, to wanting to die, to inability to get out of bed for days at a time or not showering for weeks, from substance abuse, addiction and relationship issues, to a failure to cope with sudden changes in life, as a therapist, I have been involved with helping people suffering every type of mental issue one can have.
